Unlike the standard one-hour permit, the Gorilla Habituation Experience keeps you with a semi-habituated family for up to four hours. Researchers explain each behaviour as it happens — chest-beating, play-wrestling, an infant riding its mother's back.
Crater Lake Picnic at Lake Nkuruba
Your guide carries a basket down to the lip of this perfectly circular lake, ringed by colobus monkeys and birdsong. You eat cold roasted plantain and smoked tilapia with your feet hanging over the water.

Today's permit is the Gorilla Habituation Experience, which allows a small group of up to four people to spend a full morning with a semi-habituated family alongside researchers and trackers. Where yesterday felt like a gift, today feels like a privilege — you watch the social architecture of the group reveal itself over hours rather than minutes.
Your guide translates what the researchers are noting: a new infant named two weeks ago, a sub-adult male testing the limits of the dominant silverback's patience. You eat a packed lunch on the trail before walking back.
This evening: a private bush dinner set up in the clearing beside camp, lanterns flickering in the highland breeze.
