Highlights

What you'll experience

6 moments

01

Margherita Peak Approach

At 5,109 m, Margherita is Africa's third-highest summit. The final push across the Stanley Glacier before dawn, headtorches cutting through thin air, delivers a silence so complete you can hear your own pulse.

02

Giant Groundsel Zones

Between 3,500 m and 4,200 m the trail passes through forests of Senecio adnivalis — groundsels that grow six metres tall and look like something from the Jurassic. Your Bakonzo guide, Expedito Masereka, calls them 'the old ones of the mountain'.

03

Bujuku Lake Camp

The camp at Lake Bujuku sits in a glacial bowl at 3,962 m. On clear afternoons the lake mirrors Mount Baker's snowfields. Dinner is hot soup and posho served in a stone hut while mist rolls across the water.

04

Bakonzo Culture and Mountain Lore

The Bakonzo people have lived at the Rwenzoris' base for centuries, weaving their identity around the peaks they call Rwenjura — the rainmaker. Evenings at Nyabitaba Hut include time with your lead guide to hear those stories first-hand.

05

Afro-Alpine Birding

The Rwenzoris hold several endemic and near-endemic birds. Watch for the Rwenzori turaco, its crimson wing-flash vivid against wet moss, and the strange, call of the Rwenzori nightjar drifting up from the heather at dusk.

06

Scott Elliott Pass

The crossing of Scott Elliott Pass at 4,372 m connects the Bujuku and Kitandara valleys. On a clear morning the glaciated faces of Mounts Speke and Baker frame the path on either side — a composition no telephoto lens can flatten.

Why choose us

Why choose a Small Group Journey?

The Rwenzoris demand something of you. Here is what we bring to make sure they give something back.

Bakonzo-Led Guiding

Every ascent is led by certified Bakonzo guides — people for whom these peaks are not a product but a homeland. Their knowledge of micro-weather, trail conditions, and altitude management is unmatched.

Small Groups, Full Attention

We cap the circuit at eight climbers. That means your guide-to-guest ratio stays high, campfire conversation stays real, and the mountain doesn't feel like a conveyor belt.

Logistical Rigour

Park permits, porter welfare payments at Uganda Mountaineering Association rates, supplemental oxygen carried from Day 3, and a fully stocked medical kit — these are not optional extras. They are built into every departure.
