Shoebill on Akagera's Northern Lakes
Stand in a flat-bottomed boat at dawn on Lake Rwanyakazinga. The papyrus is still, the water the colour of pewter, and somewhere in the reed wall a shoebill is watching you back with prehistoric patience.
African Green Broadbill in Nyungwe
One of Rwanda's most sought Albertine endemics, the African green broadbill favours mid-storey tangles in Nyungwe's interior. Your specialist guide knows the Uwinka trail sections where calling pairs appear reliably after the 6 a.m. mist clears.
Ruwenzori Turaco at Volcanoes Slopes
On the lower flanks of the Virungas, Hagenia-Hypericum woodland fills with the electric crimson flash of Ruwenzori turaco wings. The sound — a rolling, hollow bark — reaches you before the bird does.
Grey Crowned Crane Roost at Lake Ihema
Each evening, skeins of grey crowned cranes fly low over Lake Ihema to roost in the acacias on the eastern shore. The spectacle lasts perhaps eight minutes and feels wildly disproportionate to its brevity.
Canopy Walkway Dawn Watch, Nyungwe
At 50 metres above the forest floor, the Uwinka canopy walkway sways gently while chestnut-winged starlings and yellow-eyed black flycatchers move through the branches at eye level — a perspective ground birding never gives you.
Papyrus Gonolek and Swamp Warblers, Rugezi Marsh
Rugezi Marsh in the north rewards the early riser with papyrus gonolek, greater swamp warbler, and the skulking white-collared oliveback — three species that demand patience and repay it.

Three Distinct Habitats in One Circuit
Akagera's papyrus lakes, Nyungwe's Albertine montane forest, and the Virunga foothills each hold species the others do not. This circuit is designed so the transitions between them are drives, not flights — the roadside birding on travel days adds to the list rather than consuming it.
Maximum Six Guests

Day 1
Arrival in Kigali – Welcome to Rwanda
Upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional guide from Arrive Africa Safaris and transferred to your hotel in Kigali.
Depending on your arrival time, you may relax at your hotel or enjoy a short tour of Kigali, one of Africa's cleanest and safest cities. If time permits, you may visit local craft markets, cultural centers, or the Kigali Genocide Memorial before returning to your hotel. Spend the evening preparing for the exciting birding adventure ahead.

Day 2
Transfer to Nyungwe National Park – Afternoon Birding
After an early breakfast, depart Kigali and travel to Nyungwe National Park, one of Africa's oldest montane rainforests and one of the continent's richest biodiversity hotspots. The scenic drive passes through Rwanda's beautiful countryside, offering spectacular views of rolling hills, tea plantations, forests, and traditional villages.
Upon arrival, enjoy your first guided birdwatching excursion through Nyungwe's dense rainforest, bamboo zones, and forest edges. The park is home to more than 320 bird species, including 29 Albertine Rift endemics, making it one of Africa's finest birding destinations. Keep an eye out for spectacular species such as the Great Blue Turaco, Rwenzori Turaco, Red-collared Mountain Babbler, Regal Sunbird, and Stripe-breasted Tit. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3
Full-Day Birdwatching in Nyungwe National Park
Today is dedicated entirely to birdwatching within Nyungwe National Park. Accompanied by an experienced birding guide, explore different forest trails and habitats while searching for some of Rwanda's rarest forest birds. The park's varied elevations and vegetation support an impressive diversity of species, making every trail a rewarding experience.
Target species may include: African Green Broadbill, Handsome Francolin, Rwenzori Nightjar, Grauer's Swamp Warbler, Archer's Robin-Chat, Blue-headed Sunbird, Yellow-eyed Black Flycatcher, Shelley’s Crimsonwing
Besides birds, you may also encounter several primates, including black-and-white colobus monkeys, L'Hoest's monkeys, and blue monkeys, adding to the excitement of your forest adventure. Return to the lodge in the evening.

Day 4
Lake Kivu Birding and Boat Excursion
After breakfast, depart Nyungwe and travel to the beautiful shores of Lake Kivu, one of Africa's Great Lakes. Lake Kivu provides excellent opportunities for photographing and observing aquatic and shoreline bird species. Explore the lakeshore, wetlands, and surrounding vegetation while searching for numerous water birds.
Highlights include sightings of: African Fish Eagle, Pied Kingfisher, White-winged Tern, Malachite Kingfisher, Great Cormorant, African Jacana, Grey Heron, Little Egret
Later, enjoy a relaxing boat excursion on Lake Kivu, allowing you to observe birds from the water while taking in breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and lakeside communities. Return to your accommodation for dinner.

Day 5
Birding Safari in Akagera National Park
After breakfast, continue your journey to Akagera National Park, Rwanda's only savannah national park and one of East Africa's finest birdwatching destinations. Akagera's diverse habitats—including open grasslands, wetlands, papyrus swamps, woodlands, and lakes—support over 500 bird species. Enjoy a full-day birding game drive as you search for impressive species such as: Grey Crowned Crane, Lilac-breasted Roller, African Fish Eagle, Bateleur, Martial Eagle, Saddle-billed Stork, Papyrus Gonolek, African Openbill, Long-crested Eagle, Secretary Bird
Along the way, you may also encounter elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, antelopes, hippos, crocodiles, and, with a bit of luck, lions and leopards. Return to your lodge after an exciting day of birdwatching and wildlife viewing.

Return to Kigali – Departure
Enjoy breakfast before checking out of your lodge and beginning your journey back to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, you may stop for souvenir shopping or enjoy a brief visit to one of Kigali's craft markets before your guide transfers you to Kigali International Airport for your onward flight. Your unforgettable 6-Day Rwanda Birding Safari comes to an end, leaving you with lasting memories of Rwanda's exceptional birdlife, beautiful landscapes, and warm hospitality.

Welcome briefing and afternoon birding at Nyabarongo Wetlands, Day 1 at 1:00 p.m.
Last Group Event
Lunch in Kinigi on Day 6 before the Kigali transfer departs at 1:00 p.m.

Alternate Sightseeing
If weather closes the Uwinka canopy walk on Day 4, an alternative trail along the Gisakura tea-estate border is substituted — species tally is rarely affected.
