While standard gorilla trekking allows visitors to spend one hour with a fully habituated gorilla family, the gorilla habituation experience offers up to four hours with a semi-habituated group alongside researchers, conservationists, and expert trackers.
Only four gorilla habituation permits are issued each day, making this one of the most exclusive wildlife experiences in Africa. It is highly recommended for photographers, wildlife enthusiasts, researchers, and travelers seeking a deeper understanding of gorilla behavior and conservation efforts. The gorilla trekking and habituation experiences involve hiking through steep, densely forested terrain and may last between 3 and 8 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla families.

We built this itinerary specifically to contrast the standard hour — intimate and bounded — with the habituation experience's open-ended morning. The combination is the most complete picture of mountain gorilla behaviour available to a non-researcher.
Two Gorilla Encounters, Two Experiences
Day two gives you the polished, permitted one-hour visit with a fully habituated group. Day three opens into four hours beside a habituation group, with a UWA researcher explaining what she observes in real time. No other format on this itinerary length offers both.
Private Travel, Your Pace
Maximum six guests, private vehicle, a guide who knows Bwindi's Rushaga sector across multiple seasons. If the morning walk overruns because a hornbill is nesting at eye level, the vehicle waits.
Conservation Built In
A portion of every gorilla permit fee funds the Uganda Wildlife Authority's anti-poaching patrols and community benefit programmes. Joining a habituation cohort also directly supports the long-term research that makes mountain gorilla conservation measurable.
Itinerary
Your day-by-day journey
Day 1
Transfer from Kampala to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your Arrive Africa Safaris guide will pick you up from your hotel or residence in Kampala or Entebbe at 7:00 AM for a briefing before departing for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The journey to southwestern Uganda covers approximately 540 kilometers and takes around 8 to 9 hours. Along the way, enjoy spectacular views of rolling hills, local villages, tea plantations, and the beautiful Ugandan countryside. You will make a stop at the Equator for photography and the famous water experiment, followed by a lunch stop in Mbarara. Continue your scenic drive through the Kigezi Highlands, often referred to as the "Switzerland of Africa." Arrive at your lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Day 2
Gorilla Trekking Experience
Gorilla Trekking Experience: After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing by experienced ranger guides from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Following the briefing, begin your unforgettable trek through the dense rainforest in search of a habituated mountain gorilla family. The trek can take between 3 and 8 hours, depending on the gorillas' movements. Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one magical hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watch silverbacks protect their families, mothers care for their young, and playful juveniles interact with one another. Photography is allowed, but flash photography and loud noises are strictly prohibited. After the trek, return to your lodge for relaxation. In the evening, you may choose to enjoy an optional community walk or simply unwind at the lodge.

Day 3
Gorilla Habituation Experience & Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi
Today, you will participate in the exclusive gorilla habituation experience in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. After breakfast, transfer to the briefing point where you will join researchers, trackers, and conservation experts for an immersive day in the forest. Unlike standard gorilla trekking, the habituation experience allows you to spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family as they gradually become accustomed to human presence. This extraordinary experience provides deeper insight into gorilla behavior, social interactions, feeding habits, and conservation efforts. After your encounter, depart Bwindi and transfer to the stunning Lake Bunyonyi for relaxation.

Lake Bunyonyi Boat Ride & Return to Kampala

Later, embark on a scenic boat ride to explore some of the lake's 29 islands while taking in breathtaking views of terraced hills, local communities, and abundant birdlife. After the boat excursion, begin your return journey to Kampala or Entebbe with lunch en route. Arrive in the evening, marking the end of your unforgettable Uganda gorilla safari.
