Two Gorilla Trek Permits
On consecutive mornings you track two separate gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park. Guides like Damascène Nzeyimana know the Susa and Hirwa groups intimately, reading bent foliage and knuckle prints to find them without ever rushing the approach.
Afro-Montane Forest at Dawn
The trek begins before the mist lifts, when hagenia trees drip and the forest smells of wet earth. Yellow-billed ducks paddle across crater lakes below, and a Rwenzori turaco might flash crimson overhead before you've climbed a hundred metres.
Golden Monkey Walk, Bisate
An optional afternoon extension brings you face to face with golden monkeys — blue-listed, acrobatic, and absurdly photogenic — in bamboo thickets on the volcano's lower slopes.

Day 1
Arrival in Kigali – Kigali City Tour – Transfer to Volcanoes National ParkNorth
Upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional driver-guide from Arrive Africa Safaris. After a short safari briefing, begin exploring Kigali, one of Africa's cleanest and safest capitals.
Enjoy a guided city tour that introduces you to Rwanda's remarkable history and vibrant culture. Depending on your arrival time, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which commemorates the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and tells the inspiring story of Rwanda's recovery and reconciliation. You may also explore local art galleries, handicraft markets, and cultural centers where talented artisans showcase traditional Rwandan crafts.
After lunch, depart for Volcanoes National Park, located approximately 80 kilometers northwest of Kigali. The scenic drive takes you through rolling hills, terraced farmland, and picturesque villages, offering breathtaking views that have earned Rwanda the nickname "The Land of a Thousand Hills." Upon arrival, check in to your preferred lodge and spend the evening relaxing as you prepare for the exciting gorilla trekking adventure ahead.

Day 2
Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
After an early breakfast, your guide will transfer you to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a briefing by Rwanda Development Board park rangers. During the briefing, you will learn about gorilla trekking regulations, conservation efforts, and safety guidelines before being assigned to one of the park's habituated gorilla families.
Accompanied by experienced guides and trackers, begin your trek through the bamboo forests and volcanic slopes of the Virunga Mountains. Depending on the location of the gorilla family, the trek can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours.
When you finally encounter the mountain gorillas, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watch as they feed, groom one another, care for their young, and interact peacefully within their family group. This rare wildlife encounter is widely regarded as one of Africa's most rewarding safari experiences. Along the way, you may also spot golden monkeys, forest buffaloes, birds, and other wildlife that inhabit the park. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and a well-deserved rest.
Later in the afternoon, you may choose to take a guided community walk to learn about local traditions, farming practices, and Rwandan culture, or simply relax while enjoying the spectacular views of the Virunga Mountains.

Day 3
Golden Monkey Tracking or Optional Dian Fossey Hike
Enjoy breakfast before returning to Volcanoes National Park for another exciting primate adventure. Today you will track the rare golden monkeys, one of Rwanda's most fascinating and endangered primates. These energetic monkeys are known for their striking golden-orange fur, playful behavior, and remarkable agility as they leap through the bamboo forests. Spending time observing them provides a completely different wildlife experience from gorilla trekking.
Alternatively, adventurous travelers may choose the optional Dian Fossey Tomb Hike, which leads to the former Karisoke Research Center established by the renowned primatologist. During the hike, you'll learn about Dian Fossey's pioneering work in mountain gorilla conservation and the lasting impact of her efforts in protecting these endangered animals. Please note: The Dian Fossey hike is optional and is not included in the safari price. Return to your lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, visit a nearby community or local school (when open) to experience everyday life in rural Rwanda. Meet local residents, learn about their traditions, and gain a deeper appreciation of Rwanda's culture and hospitality.

Day 4
Return to Kigali – City Tour – Departure
After breakfast, check out of the lodge and drive back to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy additional sightseeing around the city. You may visit local pottery workshops, handicraft markets, the Rwanda Art Museum, or Caplaki Craft Village to purchase beautiful handmade souvenirs, traditional baskets, wood carvings, paintings, and jewelry. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before your guide transfers you to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight.
