Highlights
What you'll experience
Margherita Summit at Dawn
Standing on the highest point in Uganda and the third-highest in Africa, you watch the sun burn the cloud sea pink while the remnant Speke Glacier glows beneath your boots. The moment is as physical as it is visual — thin air, cold metal of the ice axe, the long drop south toward Lake George.
Giant Lobelias and Groundsel Forest
Above 3,500 metres the moorland turns surreal. Giant Lobelia stuhlmannii columns stand three metres tall; Senecio rwenzoriensis trees spread silver arms over russet bogs. Guide Samuel Biira calls it 'the forest that forgot the rules' — and walking through it at dusk, you understand why.
Bujuku Lake Camp
The turquoise tarn of Lake Bujuku sits in a cirque at 3,977 metres, ringed by Elena, Speke, and Baker peaks. Clouds pour over the ridges in the afternoon and clear by evening, leaving the water mirror-still and the peaks outlined against a hard blue sky.
Bamboo Zone at Dusk
The first full day on the mountain passes through dense bamboo that rattles and drips in the afternoon rain. Olive sunbirds flicker through the canopy, and the trail turns to red clay that holds the shape of every footstep before you. This is the mountain letting you in slowly.
Crossing the Scott Elliot Pass
At 4,372 metres, the Scott Elliot Pass is a narrow col between the Bujuku and Kitandara valleys. Wind rakes it from both sides; below, the twin Kitandara lakes lie blue-black in their glacial bowl. The descent on loose scree demands full attention — and rewards it with the most dramatic campsite on the circuit.
Pre-Climb Briefing in Kasese
The trek begins not on the mountain but in Kasese town, where the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services team introduces your local guides and porters — many of them Bakonjo people whose families have worked these slopes for generations. The equipment check is thorough, the tea is strong, and the mood is the particular excitement of a thing that is finally starting.
Why choose us
Why choose a Small Group Journey?
The Rwenzoris are technically demanding, logistically intricate, and genuinely remote. We have been sending groups into these mountains long enough to know what goes wrong and how to prevent it — and our team reflects that.
Certified Mountain Guides
Every departure is led by a Rwenzori Mountaineering Services-certified guide with glacier travel qualifications. Samuel Biira and his team are Bakonjo — born in the shadow of these peaks — and their route knowledge is generational, not just technical.
Group Size Capped at 8
Eight trekkers maximum means the huts don't overflow, the pacing conversations are real, and the summit approach doesn't turn into a queue on the glacier. Smaller groups also move more responsibly across fragile afro-alpine habitat.
Full Safety and Rescue Cover
All participants are covered by mountain rescue insurance coordinated through RMS, and each departure carries a portable pulse oximeter and supplemental oxygen. We brief on altitude sickness protocols on Day 1 and take conservative turnaround decisions seriously.
