Getting Lost in the Marrakech Medina

Embracing chaos in Morocco's most vibrant city

The moment you step through Bab Agnaou, one of the original gates into Marrakech's medina, your senses are overwhelmed. The narrow alleys twist and turn, opening suddenly onto squares filled with vendors, musicians, and storytellers.

Colorful textiles and handwoven rugs hang in one of the medina's countless carpet shops, each one a maze of patterns and stories.

I spent my first day completely disoriented, which turned out to be the perfect strategy. Without a GPS signal or consistent landmarks, I was forced to engage with the city on its own terms—following the smell of spices to hidden courtyards, pausing to watch artisans at work, and accepting countless cups of mint tea.

The medina is organized by trade: the tanneries in one section, the metalworkers in another, the textile merchants elsewhere. Once you understand this logic, navigation becomes easier. But part of Marrakech's magic is in the unexpected discoveries—a stunning riad hidden behind a plain door, a rooftop café overlooking the chaos below.

By my third day, I was navigating by instinct and landmarks: turn left at the carpet shop with the blue cat, right after the man selling snails. The medina had become familiar, if never fully knowable.
